the town of sciacca

Sciacca is the second biggest town of the province of Agrigento, after the capital city. The city has historically gained importance thanks to its strategic position in the southern coastline of Sicily, between Agrigento and Selinunte, but also thanks to the thermal baths that have attracted various populations since the prehistorical times (and even today active). Another distinctive historical sign is the production of beautiful ceramic, characterized by the very strong colors of yellow and blue.

The town has been following the various historical events of the island, having been conquered by the greeks, who here fought also many wars against the Fenici, who occupied the island from north africa. It has been very important for the Romans, thanks to the thermal baths and for the Arabs, who basically built the current structure of the city. Historically the town has been a symbol of the melting pot that Sicily represent, being inhabited by christians, muslims and jews.

Today Sciacca is famous for its fishing boats fleet, the second biggest of Sicily after Mazzara del Vallo, and the port is still a very central and important area of the city.

Like many Sicilian towns with such a rich history, the city can showcase a miriad of beautiful churches (the duomo itself was established by Guiditta, daughter of the Norman king Ruggero), noble palaces and two castles (the old Norman castle and the new castle, also called Castello Luna, from the family name of the last owner).
