Top 7 bakeries in Copenhagen

A wonderful day in Copenhagen begins with a crispy Danish pastry!

In November 2019 we went to Noma in Copenhagen to celebrate my birthday. We went to Hart Bageri, the bakery I had always wanted to go, and Lille bakery, another bakery recommended by a chef friend. Here's a list of the top 7 bakeries in Copenhagen.

1 - Juno the bakery

After a visit to Hart Bageri bakery, Juno the bakery is still the no. 1 bakery in Copenhagen. The baker worked at Noma before going his own way.

Kardemomme snurre: the hottest item in the store is this cardamom roll. The texture is very firm and not sticky at all. The flavor may feel a bit strange at first, but it gets addictive after the first bites.

Croissant: layer by layer, the butter is highly saturated, it tastes like a bit of pastry, it's very fragrant. The one with almonds is also recommended. The outer layer is slightly charred with roasted almonds, and the aroma is full of fragrance.

Tebirkes: poppy-seed Danish pastry is a combination of croissant texture and richness, with a crispy outer layer of poppy-seed.

All their baked goods have a great texture and just enough butter to give the right fragrance to the pastry.During a trip to Copenhagen in 2018, we went to several bakeries and we both felt they were way behind Juno.

In addition, we bought the bun (sourdough) and ate it three days after we bought it. The crust was still soft! The taste and acidity are very good.

When it comes to coffee, there was only the batch brew, which was made from Prolog beans. Buy a glass (optional with milk) with bread, simple and delicious, and eat in a good mood.

2 - Lille bakery

Lille's location looks like a long way off (near Noma 2.0), but it's actually a quick 2a-bus ride from the train station. The upper and lower floors are reserved for the diners. The open kitchen offers a view of the bakers' activities inside and outside. Lunch will be available from 10:00 to 15:00.

We ordered three types of bread including sweet, salty and sour dough for breakfast.

Berliner: one of the most famous things about this bakery is the Berliner doughnut. Fried crisp skin, no greasy taste. The outer layer is sprinkled with sugar but will not feel too sweet, the overall texture is very soft. Well, the best Berliner yet isn't in Germany. It's in Denmark.

JSL_1239.jpg

Good sausage roll. It's not just the outside of the pastry, but the inside of the sausage is also mixed with a lot of fennel seeds, which keeps the minced meat from getting too firm and spoiling the taste. Crispy and not greasy pastry, it is enough for two people.

Sourdough bread with ham: the bread feels really good and the crust doesn't feel too hard. Plus mixed seeds, really sweet. It was served with raw ham (depending on your preference, you can choose jam if you don't like it) and savory butter.

Coffee is only organic drip coffee, similar to Juno. Beans are also from Prolog.

Breakfast for two, including coffee, for a total of 180DKK. People who go after 10 o 'clock can order some hot food and have brunch.

3 - Hart Bageri

We make sourdough bread at home and our first inspiration are the books from the Tartine Bakery. Since Richard Hart, one of Tartine's chief bakers, teamed up with Noma to open Hart Bageri bakery in Copenhagen, we have been looking forward to check it out.

For one thing, Hart's salty pastry and bread are good, but for sweet pastry, butter and sugar are a bit too much.

Kardemomme croissant: the cardamom croissant is amazing, super crunchy, rich and creamy with cardamom's unique flavor. The first bite is amazing. But the amount of butter is really too much!

Kanelsnegl: we love cinnamon rolls so much that we often goes to Zeit Fur Brot in Hamburg to buy them and take them home. This is a bit of a cake, flatter than the usual cinnamon rolls and with way more sugar. Intense cinnamon notes with lemon syrup acidity. The first bite let us shout: so good! Later, because of the butter and sugar, keep eating it becomes very hard. By the way, be sure to finish it while it's hot, otherwise it will get sticky.

Dobbelt bagt croissant: two small bites each, the rest packed. Almond chips and almond paste inside a very thick croissant. This one is also quite hard to finish, due to its heaviness.

"Hart is mainly bread," she said. "I can have a bite of its cardamom crisp."

lsehorn: the Danish sausage roll is super tasty and has a very crispy crust (well, not too much butter). To be eaten while still some warm to get the best from the tender meat sausage with juice, plus the thick cumin flavor, love love.

The basic sourdough bread with butter and cheese: fun, the basic bread tastes and feels like the one we bake at home. The accompanying cheese slices are also delicious.

There are two types of sausage rolls in the store, and we packed an extra one with cumin because it was so delicious. We also want to try another type of sausage, covered with seeds. The sausage is still good, but without the cumin on the flavor, the outer seed dough also makes the whole become too thick.

Smoked ham & cheese croissant: the layers of pastries are good, although there's plenty of butter, but it's hollow so it doesn't feel too heavy.

Baked pumpkin seed sour dough bread: we also bought a loaf of baked pumpkin seed sour bread to take home. Had it the day after and it was still delicious!

There are about 10 seats and a variety of coffees to order. We recommend not to choose too many sweet pastries and have some of their savory offers. Per piece about 35-40DKK.

4 - Bageriet Brød

When we went to Copenhagen in 2017, we went to Bageriet Brød, one of the best bakeries recommended by many lists at the time. I guess that's when we fell in love with Danish pastries.

The store is really small, mainly a take away business. there are a few tables and chairs outside. As we sat outside eating our breakfast in silence, we watched the long line outside the store.

Morning bun: our favorite morning pastry.

Croissant: butter is good, too. It's crisp.

Lemon raspberry tart: more sweet than sour, just right for those who don’t like sweet or sour, a bit like a cheesecake.

Meyers Bageri currently has several locations in Copenhagen, and this one in Jagersborggade is the first bakery they opened in 2010.

Kanelsnurrer: cinnamon roll. Smell the sweetness. For breakfast it gives a special satisfaction, but will make you really full.

Tebirkes: poppy seed Danish pastry is also good, layer upon layer. Compared to Juno's, the bread is slightly heavier.

6 - Landbageriet

Google Map says Landbageriet, but the sign outside the shop is “naturbageriet”, and we wondered if this was the right place. The bakery is close to Torvehallerne food market and Queen Louis bridge.

Offers a variety of gluten-free/ vegan breads. We suggest you go early, so you can have a wider choice offer. When we arrived at noon, much had been sold out.

JSL_5257.jpg

Bought FRØSNAPPER and thebirkes, two Danish pastry, in a vegan version. It's very fragrant and it tastes good. To be honest, many times the taste of vegan breads and pastries is mediocre, and the aroma and taste are a bit off, because neither the eggs nor the butter can be served. These two vegan Danish pastries are both delicious and tasty, and really amazing.

7 - Mirabelle

Mirabelle, the Michelin-starred Relae's bakery and brunch home, also has a night offer for wine lovers. It's all natural leavened bread.

JSL_0127.jpg
JSL_0128.jpg

Sourdough bread: Sourdough bread is served with borlotti beans and a spicy tomato paste, then tossed with croutons.

JSL_0151.jpg

Sourdough rye bread: Mirabelles Eggs Benedict pairs rye bread. The amount of spinach in the bowl is one step closer to a super healthy diet. Served with baked walnuts and runny eggs, it's delicious. The egg is slowly cooked at 62 degrees, with a flaky, breakable meringue, and is really at the highest level juiciness.

Croissant: croissant is good, too. One of the classic Italian breakfasts is a croissant with cappuccino. The beans come from the Coffee Collective, a boutique Coffee shop.
