castelmola: little taormina

Castelmola is a small village located above Taormina and mostly famous for its closeness to the touristic town. Castelmola, due to its position, has historically just been a military location, as testified by the rests of the Norman castle on the top of the mountain.

The little village has a privileged view on the coast and on Taormina, which makes it a favorite location for tourists that want to spend less money but still stay in the area of Taormina.

While now the town can be easily reached by car thanks a to a wide street, until 1928 the town could be reached only through a stairway cut in the rock, leading to a beautiful gate welcoming the guests to the city. Today the same gate and part of the stairway are still visible on the entrance square of Sant'Antonio.

Remarkable also the square where is located the Duomo or Chiesa Madre, from where a stunning view can be admired.

The town of Castelmola is famous for the production of a special liquor, called almond wine or vino alle mandorle.
